Products / Marvin Gaye - What's Going On
[R&B / soul] In the run-up to the recording of this incredibly poignant record, Gaye had been experiencing depression. He, like many other African Americans, felt a sense of disenchantment and dissociation from the country in which they lived. He'd also been sharing letters with his brother, who had been fighting in Vietnam, The pointlessness of that "war" further exacerbated his sentiments. It was this point where he pursued this album - much to the chagrin of Motown founder Berry Gordy. Despite Gordy's reticence, the album was an immediate critical and commercial success. Highlight track: 'Inner City Blues'
